While Robert Redford shoots himself in soft-focus and murmurs to farm animals, another aging movie star is creating artful, cogent political satire. Warren Beatty wrote and directed Bulworth, the story of a dissolute Democratic Senator from California who decides to commit suicide by taking out a hit on himself. Before that act can take place, however, Senator Bulworth gives a frank speech to an inner-city church in Los Angeles, meets Nina, an enigmatic African-American woman (Halle Berry), and discovers the power of rap. He then tries to call off the hit and promote his new message, while his handlers scramble to regain control of his newfound, unorthodox "campaign style."
Bulworth is something unusual today: a well-crafted, thoughtful, witty Hollywood movie. It even has characters, with motivations that make sense. Neither individuals nor communities get off easy; the senator's coked-up assistants are nicely juxtaposed with a (much more sympathetic) gang of juvenile black drug dealers. And when Senator Bulworth tells a room full of Hollywood insiders that their product is crap, Warren Beatty is essentially making the same remark to a much wider audience. Beatty even skewers himself: a pair of bartenders recognize Jay Bulworth-as Clint Eastwood, then realize that, no, he's George Hamilton.
This is a movie with a message, but unlike Rob Reiner's The American President, or Ivan Reitman's Dave, it doesn't try to cloak that message in gosh-darn-it, why-can't-we-all-just-get-along American goodness. And it's willing to make the point that real messages, the kind that aren't about building bridges to the 21st century, often anger the people that hear them. Even if you disagree with Beatty's liberal politics, see the movie anyway, if only to see him in his gangsta street clothes.
