Matthew_Star's Full Review: X-Files: Fight the Future
I've been a longtime fan of the X-Files series, though admittedly an on again, off again viewer. So, I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't know all of the esoteric "X-Speak" and cryptic references that I feared would be a part of the movie. I really shouldn't have worried.
The X-Files Movie was extremely entertaining, and accessible!! The movie does make some references to events and people that have been featured during the course of the series, but not so much that it excludes people that have never seen it. The storyline of this flick is very easy to follow, and filled with enough exciting, and involving scenes that it could capture the attention of even the most hard-boiled skeptic! I've seen it happen!
The basic premise of the movie is that Mulder and Scully (two F.B.I. agents) who are investigating the X-Files (certain cases set aside by the U.S. Government as unexplainable and possibly Paranormal) become aware, through a chain of events, of a Global Conspiracy concerning the existance
of extraterrestrials, and their planned colonization of our Planet. In other words, the U.S. Government knows that Aliens exist, and the Aliens are not playing around!
Unfortunately for Mulder and Sculley, the men involved in this conspiracy
have absolutely no compunctions about killing people to keep this information a secret. (This brings to mind the "We Are Authorized to Shoot to Kill" signs posted around the Roswell Airforce Base.) During their investigation, Mulder and Sculley discover that these men are in the process of refining an alien virus that will be used to bring about the widespread extermination of the Human Race, and have plans of releasing it
in the not-so-distant future! Yowzers!!
One thing that the movie does very well, is also something that was present in the early stages of the t.v. show, namely interweaving the storyline with real World Events. Mulder is contacted by a gentleman who has ambiguous connections to his father, and more information than he should about what's really going on. This man asks Mulder, "Do you remember that outbreak of a strange virus named the Hanta Virus in the Southwest a few years ago?? That wasn't the Hanta Virus at all!!" This really freaked me out. I _do remember reading about the Hanta Virus, and the fact that scientists at the time were completely at a loss to offer any sort of explanation for it....
It's enough to make you raise your own questions!!
This movie truly runs the gamut of emotions, taking us on a journey from Washington, D.C. to the farthest reaches of Antarctica in a quest for the elusive Truth that seems to be hovering around somewhere "out there". The tension between Mulder and Sculley finally climaxes in a moment of....well, I won't give that part of the movie away!! Suffice it to say, The X-Files movie has enough excitement, intrigue, action, and yes, even romantic tension to please anyone!! It's a heady soup of car bombs, killer viruses, alien abductions, and sleazy governmental officials... and the special effects ain't half bad either!
