One of the best summer movie seasons in my life had to be the summer of 1998. It debuted such movies as The X-Files, The Haunting, Deep Impact and my favorite, Armageddon. Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay, teamed up to make one of the most fast pasted, action-packed movies that I have ever seen. I have been meaning to write a review of this movie for sometime, and I feel that since I have nothing else to write about, why not write a review about Armageddon.
Armageddon was my favorite movie from the summer of 1998, until last summer when The Matrix was released. My favorite movie is still The Matrix mainly because this past summer movie season was terrible. I remember buying Armageddon the first day it was on sale in the video store. I must have watched it three times that day and everyday after that. Note that I have seen this movie in the theater five times and that when I like something, I go over the top and become obsessed about it.
The Story
Bruce Willis plays a roughneck third generation oil driller named Harry Stamper. His daughter Grace (Liv Tyler) falls in love with one of his co-workers. This man is Ben Affleck. They secretly see each other until Harry finds them in a bed together. He gets mad and throughout the movie you see him disgusted about it. So enough of the love story, lets get to the action. An asteroid the size of Texas is speeding towards earth. Every plan NASA thinks up of are unfeasible and will not work. They decide that they only way to divert this asteroid is to blow it up from the inside. That’s where Harry Stamper and his crew of skilled oil riggers come in. they train for twelve days. They launch on two shuttles, The Freedom and The Independence. The task is to land on the asteroid and drill to 800 feet to blow a nuke inside. Will they make it? I guess you’ll have to watch. I never get bored of watching this movie.
Sound like a good movie? If you’re looking for a fast paced movie to rent tonight, I highly suggest renting this movie. So how good is this movie? Lets see how Armageddon stacks up. Ratings from one to five stars.
Here’s The Breakdown
Cast *****
An all-star cast filled with great acting. Bruce Willis-Harry Stamper Ben Affleck-A.J. Frost Will Patton-Chick Owen Wilson-Oscar Steve Buscemi-Rock hound Billy Bob Thornton-Dan Truman
I told you the cast was great. Just see how well they work together.
Script ****
A great story filled with nice action scenes that will make you coming back or more. Although some scenes were unbelievable and not possible but nevertheless, fun to watch. If you like space, this movie has plenty of space scenes.
Special Effect *****
This movie had a hefty budget, around 150 million dollars. So I bet a good portion of that went to doing special effects. Let me tell you, the money was put to good use. Those special effects shots will still be considered state of the art even two years later. That’s how ahead of its time they were. Any special effects studio could learn a thing or two from this film.
Overall *****
Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Maybe it’s my second favorite. You can’t help but love the space concept and the end of the world. I’m still wiping the drool off my shirt from those mouth-watering special effects. Watch as Harry’s crew drills on the asteroid and witness the many problems they face to save the world. Cant find anything to rent at Blockbuster? Rent the classic action movie, Armageddon.
Bottom Line: If you are a fan of action movies, watch this movie!
