Thanks, Tyler! I am honored - seriously, what a nice thing to say. (But if you do get inspired to review Lawn Dogs at triumphant long last, go for it!)
And no, I haven't read Sandlin's books, but you're the second person to tell me I'm missing out, so perhaps I'll find time to rectify that.
cheers,

Outstanding! Thanks for telling me: Let future comment-section readers note that Darren and Nate watched and loved this movie.
As for your quibble, i agree, and modified it to just read "It carries the weight of a fairy tale". That's praise, of course -- fairytales tend to be the stories we learn earliest and remember best.
Where i get the idea, aside from the beginning and end, is just that a lot of the basic idea for the story seems very elemental, and most of the main characters (Devon, Trent, Devon's parents, Brett) could very easily have been born as archetypes, from beautiful beast to wicked stepfather to evil prince. It's just that Lawn Dogs wasn't content to _leave_ anyone as archetypes, and so we have all these vastly real moments, as well as characters (Sean, Nash, Trent's parents) who simply don't fit any fairy-tale roles at all. I still sense the basic setup. But i freely admit i might be imagining.
cheers,
- Brian

"Zaxaroplasteion". It turns out to mean, in fact, "pastry bakery", in Greek. But it still _sounds_ like an oppressively stark 23rd-century complex where surgery is performed on Dr. Seuss characters, so i, for one, still think it'd make a great band name.

Oh, no! I forgot how to spell that bakery in Arlington!! Was that it? I knew I would forget. I should have written it down. I can't remember anything if I don't write it down. Aargh.

Oh! I'm sure i noticed the existence of a book Skipped Parts while watching the movie's credits, but otherwise it's news. I'm sure the movie is probably horrible as an adaptation of the book: such is the nature of the genre. On it's own, it was an excellent movie, but you'll probably never know, just as i'll never go see the movie Paul Newman (whom i admire) made of Richard Russo's great Nobody's Fool.

Mikey, Mikey, i failed to make myself clear -- Rushmore (a 1998 film) followed Lawn Dogs _chronologically_, #1 in its own year's glamour pool. I apologize for any implied slander.
Now that I go back to read said paragraph, I see that it is plain as day. This rabid Rushmore fan jumped to a conclusion, and before he knew it his mania and his foaming mouth distracted him from what you were really saying. In the light of day, I apologize.
You, and friend Andy, are both back in my good books.

Briian,
but Trent definitely pronounced it "shiit".
That's hilarious because I met a woman this weekend whose name is "Tiina." She pronounces it "Tina," but my friends and I got hours of amusement out of pronouncing everything with an extra syllable.
Easily amused,

Brian,
Fantastic review of a movie I've never heard of but am now dying to see.
how long should a man resist a cute girl who climbs trees and howls at the moon and wants to see his ugly scar from when he got shot?
I would say he should resist for three weeks and then give in to his lust.

Lawn Dogs was Andy's favorite movie of 1997, followed by Rushmore at the head of its year's class, so clearly Andy does rock.
Wait a sec. Andy had Rushmore behind Lawn Dogs. Now, I haven't seen the latter, but I can guarantee it's an inferior movie to the former. I'm starting to question this Andy guy's tastes.
Personally, i find the Rules of Attraction's willingness to patiently wait its turn something of a betrayal of its principle, but ah well.
Well gee, it's got Rules right there in its title. You'd think it would at least know how to follow them.
Unless It changes and mutates over the course of the film, and starts bubbling and turning green. Does it?
Well, not really. But he does sprout new patches of hair each time, in new and interesting places on his body. Does that help?
but Trent definitely pronounced it "shiit".
Excellent. I love it when the mother of invention, necessity, is also the mother of meaning.

No! We want to know what Andy thinks! Andy rocks!
Well, Lawn Dogs was Andy's favorite movie of 1997, followed by Rushmore at the head of its year's class, so clearly Andy does rock. His favorite movies of 2002 were the Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and the Rules of Attraction, but those haven't snuck to the top of my Netflix queue yet. Personally, i find the Rules of Attraction's willingness to patiently wait its turn something of a betrayal of its principle, but ah well.
Mr. Rockwell bore his birthday suit in last Christmas' Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He bore it a lot, actually. I'm telling you because you seem impressed by this kind of thing
Honestly, him baring it once per movie seems pretty adequate to me. Unless It changes and mutates over the course of the film, and starts bubbling and turning green. Does it? Man, that Chuck Barris was wild.
I wonder if your newly-found way of dodging the Eps Naughty Words Censor also doubles as a comment on the accents in this film. It'd be most simpatico if Trent and Devon pronounced "shiit"
Devon didn't use such language, but Trent definitely pronounced it "shiit". Though since i discovered this spelling trying to figure out a usable name for the Princess Mononoke character not quite known as "Ashiitake", a drawl clearly isn't mandatory.

Hey! Neat. Someone who can actually RE-watch this film: don't meet many of those people. Especially not gifted-writer someones with power and influence. As you enjoy this one, remember who sent you to see it, and remember how much he'd probably enjoy one of those pretty Most Helpful ratings.
Mind you, you're allowed to write your _own_ rave review, and you're even allowed to write it more wittily and insightfully. But that's not the end-all of helpfulness. Who's with me, people?

Shiit and Giggles (Reply to this comment)

Voxy-
Having now seen Lawn Dogs for the third time, I am quite sure that this 1997 film is my favorite movie ever
How come friend Andy, the one "who has long earned himself permanent trust as the person who influenced [you] to watch Lawn Dogs, Amores Perros, Tape, and Rushmore, [and who] selected the New Zealand film the Price of Milk as his favorite movie of 2001" didn't get a name check here? You think we are at all interested in what your tastes in movies are? No! We want to know what Andy thinks! Andy rocks!
Sam Rockwell who single-handedly salvaged Box of Moonlight, and also stripped naked, as a character actor the previous year
Mr. Rockwell bore his birthday suit in last Christmas' Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He bore it a lot, actually. I'm telling you because you seem impressed by this kind of thing, and didn't want you to miss any shots of Sam's tuchus floating around in the cinematic ether. Yr welcome.
I wonder if your newly-found way of dodging the Eps Naughty Words Censor also doubles as a comment on the accents in this film. It'd be most simpatico if Trent and Devon pronounced their shits, "shiit", like it had two syllables instead of one, as if they were filthy-mouthed rejects from the cast of the Dukes of Hazard.
Anyway, enough horsing around. This review certainly lives up to the level of admiration you have for the movie. Kudos.

Brian,
This is a hell of a review! It's been awhile since I saw Lawndogs, I think it's time for a re-watch. I do particularly remember loving that scene on the bridge, with him holding up the comings and goings of the vaunted gated ones. Fabulous.
