I wonder if everyone who has seen all of Matt Damon's movies, comes to the same conclusion as me: They all seem the same. I don't know if that is a skill, a curse, or if I'm just crazy. Rounders is no different. You get that same vibe you get when you watch all of the rest of his movies. If you enjoyed them then you should check this one out, but here me out first.
Matt Damon stars as a fantastic poker player/law student who loses all his money. After doing so, he makes a promise to his girlfriend that he won't play again. But when his old pal "Worm"(Norton) gets out of jail, Damon soon realizes just how much poker meant to him. Is it worth giving up his girlfriend and his law degree to play a game?
Of course this isn't all that is in Rounders. Of course Norton is a dirty player so he soon gets in trouble with his debts to the KGB. Damon and Norton soon find themselves thousands of dollars in debt with only a few days to win the money.
The ending in Rounders seems a little inconclusive and unresolved, but it is not hard to see what the director was going for. You do kind of wish there was 10 more minutes so you can see the conclusion you expected, but the abscence could be seen as refreshing, a draw your own conclusion if you will.
Rounders is a great flick for anyone that has picked up a hand in a game of poker. It gets you feeling like you felt when you got your first winning hand. Rounders is very well acted, and just a great, slightly above average movie. Worth a rental some rainy day.
