If you like thrilling car chases, top-secret intrigue, spy movies, shoot-outs and Robert DeNiro... then this is the film for you.
This film opened in September 1998 -- so it has been about two years since I saw it in its original, theatrical release. Now, watching this movie on DVD, I feel just as excited about the action, the characters, and the story. The movie is a treat to experience on DVD because it also contains a feature-length audio commentary by the director, John Frankenheimer and a never-before-seen alternate ending. Even if you saw this film several times, you should watch it again and listen to the director’s commentary to hear all the fascinating details of how this movie was made.
DeNiro plays Sam, who appears to be a masterless mercenary. He takes a job as a hired bandit to retrieve a mysterious briefcase from an unknown “enemy” for an unknown employer. He finds himself critiquing, then overtaking, the supervision of a covert mission that features some of the most stunning and stupefying car chases you’ll ever seen in a motion picture. What is amazing is that most of the high-speed chases, performed by race-drivers who are not trained stunt drivers, also involved the appearance of the main actors and not their stunt doubles. 80 cars were wrecked in the course of this film’s production, which should give you an indication of how intense the driving scenes are.
DeNiro gives an outstanding performance that every fan will applaud. Jean Reno also plays a great role as a hired gun. The movie was filmed in France, and the location shots, special effects, and photography all add to make this a visually interesting film.
This is a 5-star film, a DeNiro classic, and deserves to be in every film buff’s library. Want to catch a preview? Here is a link to the official website: http://www.mgm.com/ronin/index.adv.html
