To start, let me say this. The car chases in this movie are unbelievable. If there is one thing that this movie does and does well it is definitely the car chases. The movie revolves around a group of criminals called Ronin. They are hired by an unknown person with the goal of stealing a top-secret briefcase before it is sold to the highest bidder. After several mishaps two of the Ronin, Robert DeNiro and Jean Reno, must now trust each other in order to get their money and stay alive.
Although this film wasn't terrible, I was rather disappointed. I was expecting much more from a film starring such fine actors. Especially Robert DeNiro and Jean Reno. It isn't their fault however, as they both contribute excellent performances in this film. Although Ronin is not a terrible film, there are much better ones out there that deal with almost the same subject matter. The only thing that makes this movie stand out is its car chases and that just isn't enough to make a film great. Overall, Ronin is an average film that will entertain some and bore others.
Even though the film on this DVD suffers from mediocrity the audio/visual quality does not. The standout on this DVD is the sound. It's reference quality. Between the gunshots, explosions, sirens and car effects this soundtrack rocks. The amount of directional effects amazed me at times, as this film puts them to such good use. The video on this DVD is also excellent but gray is the most used color in this film so it really doesn't stand out against other excellent transfers. That said, there are no problems with this transfer as it holds up throughout the film, providing excellent detail.
