I usually catch movies like these when they're on TV rather than renting them at the theater. While channel surfing, I caught sight of Billy Crudup, whom I had never seen before, but found him quite appealing, so the surfing stopped. Then I got into the movie, and found that it was actually a very well made movie. The story of Steve Prefontaine captured my interest and soon after watching that movie, I found myself surfing the web looking for more information on the limitless athlete. Not too long ago, at Blockbuster, I saw another movie about Prefontaine. In fact, it was called "Prefontaine". It had Jared Leto(My So-Called Life) who played Steve Prefontaine. Just thinking that there's another movie to compare to this one made me look away. I can't imagine how bad that movie looked compared to this. With Donald Sutherland, you can't lose.
Billy Crudup is Steve Prefontaine, and let me just say, he did a magnificent job slipping into character, as well as Donal Sutherland(who plays William Bowerman, Pre's coach). Monica Potter plays Pre's love interest, Mary Marckx, who at first pushes him away, but being the passionate man that he was, who didn't give up on anything and believe he was capable of anything, didn't let go of her so easily. I really enjoyed how it wasn't just a love story or just a drama, but it was both. It focuses a little bit on Pre's love life and a little bit on his running career and little bit on his relationship with Bowerman. It was really an amazingly well told story, even thought I don't know too much about Prefontaine. I'm sure the movie was pretty accurate to the actual life he lead. If they compare well, Steve lead a very interesting life.
Love, drama, comedy, and ending in tragedy, this movie touched my soft spot. Though I didn't cry, I sure was shocked at the end, due to the fact that I had no idea who Steve Prefontaine was before this. I was actually in awe for about ten minutes, amazed by how the movie just shocked me with this horrible tragedy. Of course, anyone who knew of Prefontaine, certainly wasn't surprised he died. Good movie, without a doubt.
