phungus's Full Review: There's Something About Mary
What I love about Something About Mary is that if you remove a couple of scenes and change a few lines, it is basically a sappy romance story that could have starred Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan. However, the amazing Farrelly brothers (who brought us Kingpin and Dumb & Dumber), have turned the age-old story of boy-still-in-love-with-high-school-sweetheart into something funny and sweet.
Something About Mary begins in the 80's, where Ben Stiller is a nerdy teenager too shy to ask out the girl of his dreams, played the the gorgeous Cameron Diaz. Mary (Diaz) has a mentally retarded brother who gets picked on by some bullys, and Still sticks up for him. This, of course, wins Stiller the admiration of Diaz and she asks him to go to the prom. On the night of the prom, Stiller has a bit of an zipper accident in the bathroom and ends up going to the hospital. He never got to go with to the prom with Mary and was too emberassed to ever see her again.
Jump to present day. Now in his late 20's/early 30's, Stiller still regrets losing touch with Mary and decides to hire a private investigator, played by Matt Dillon. Dillon is a shady, scheming low-life who sees Stiller as just another stalker. Dillon manages to track down Mary and falls in love with her instantly. He then tells Stiller than Mary is deformed, overweight, has a bunch of kids, etc. Despite this, Stiller wants to see her again.
By chance, Stiller finds Mary and they begin to go out. Dillon gets in the way and chaos ensues. It seems that Stiller and Dillon are not the only ones after Mary. In fact, most every guy is!
There's Something About Mary is a crude movie. It features lots of potty humor and shows a guy masturbating. The profanity is reduced to a few words, but the sights on-screen more than make up for the lack of dirty language. There is some animal abuse and the mentally and physically handicapped are made fun of. In other words, if you are the slightest bit prudish, steer way clear of this movie.
Despite it's silliness, this movie is a wonderful comedy. The cast is perfect and there are enough little twists to keep this one going. There really IS something about Mary, otherwise it wouldn't have cleared well over $100 million at the box office.
