I have to admit, I'm amazed at the thought of an afterlife. I'm not part of any organized religion or anything, but I do wonder if there is some conscious life after death. If there is, I hope it's like this movie. Some spoilers ahead if you haven't seen it. You've been warned.
The movie opens with a short bit showing how in love the two main characters, Chris (Robin Williams) and Annie (Annabella Sciorra), are with each other. The picture of a wonderful family is painted, and the viewer is hooked. It makes it that much tougher then when their two children are killed, followed quickly by Chris' death. The scenes of Chris in his afterlife trying to soothe Annie are heart-wrenching. Eventually, Chris moves on to an afterlife of his own creating. This is where the awesome visual work appears in this film.
The Academy Award-winning effects in this movie are stunning. In his afterlife, Chris imagines a landscape out of his wife's paintings. Literally, the paintings come to life. Truly beautiful, it is this vision of the afterlife that appealed to me on a personal level. As Chris comes to refine his view of the afterlife, he wonders about his children, and comes to find them in unforseen places.
However, Chris is still linked to his soulmate Annie, and in her grief over losing her entire family, she commits suicide. Just as Chris came to an afterlife of his own making, Annie goes to hers, and it is Hell.
To tell much more would be completely wrong of me, but suffice it to say this movie has great acting by Williams and Sciorra, as well as Max von Sydow and Cuba Gooding, Jr. If you haven't seen this movie, you could definitely do worse for general fare. But for those with questions and doubts about their beliefs of an afterlife, this movie can be an amazing experience.
