Oh, blah blah blah. A summary of Shakespeare in Love? Shakespeare met a young woman, they had sex, and then she left. The emphasis of the film is on how Viola de Lesseps became Shakespeare's muse, which apparently is consolation enough when she's banished to a loveless marriage in a foreign wilderness.
Why, then, is the film so popular? It employs all the elements that make movies great: sweeping music, elaborate period costumes, and a gorgeous heroine. For all the Shakespearean language, however, there's not much else here. And Joseph Fiennes, as William Shakespeare, is a simpering fop. It's hard to root for such a self-involved, unpleasant man. It's even harder to imagine the real Shakespeare wouldn't have had something of a sense of humor.
In spite of the Tom Stoppard script, there's not much here for the traditional Shakespeare lover, either. With dozens of plays and sonnets to choose from, the allusions to Shakespeare's works are few and obvious. See it for the costumes, or to gaze upon Gwynneth Paltrow, but not for the drama.
