The Good:
"Shakespeare in Love" is a totally adequate film.
Its cinematography is excellent. The costumes are excellent. There
are a few laughs. This is a film that you can enjoy watching, and not
regret having paid the admission price. But it is forgettable.
The Bad:
The script is pitiful, sad, boring, USED!!! We have heard all of this
two, maybe three thousand times already. It is full of New York City
writers cliches. "I'm a writer too" and "Follow that boat (taxi)" simply
ruined the attempt to gain any class. I mean, is this clever? Is this a
brilliant breakthrough comedy? Or is it just plain darn silly, high
school sophomoric level writing?
The Ugly:
This most forgettable mediocre film was nominated for Best Picture.
The Bad Ugly:
IT WON!
This is the most unjustly deserved nomination (forget winning) that I
can recall. How embarrassed will the academy be in the future as it
looks back? Were bribes paid? Was the vote count honest? How
could they do this? Were perverts attracted to a nude G. P.?
Extortion? Off planet (alien) influence? The CIA or FBI - some
government plot to discredit the film industry? How???? Why?????
