Okay I guess I can believe it I purchased this DVD over the internet for about $7.50, having now watched it I can easily say we could have skipped it, but now that its part of the collection I wont simply throw it out.
Baby Songs Original is a DVD for young children, primarily babies and toddlers. The discs main features include nineteen songs that cover topics very familiar to this age group.
Song titles include Baby Songs Theme, Piggy Toes, Shout & Whisper, Share, My Mommy Comes Back, Babys Good Doggie, Rolling, Security, Rub a Dub, Today I Took My Diaper Off, So Big, Walking, Hammer, Daddy Be A Horsie, Big Things come From Little Things, Put Your Toes To Your Nose, Just Fun, Family Harmony, So Happy Youre Here.
Each video is separated by a short cartoon of the same the baby and his dog. Each of their activities in one way or another mirrors the subject of the following song. This was basically down time for my son and he didnt really take any interest in the cartoons, but the videos seemed to start out pretty good with Piggy Toes.
All of the songs on the DVD are extremely simple and each video includes a cast of young children that seem to range anywhere from a few months old to a ten or years of age (if I had to guess). The video for Piggy Toes starts out with a bunch of kids wiggly their toes for the camera. This made my son really take interest since hes commonly obsessed with him own toes. Unfortunately when the next cartoon came on my son made a B-line for his room in disinterest.
His interest didnt fully return until Babys Good Doggie came on. This video was a little silly to me. The video starts out with a young girl and a dog (which is an adult in a dog costume) and then all of sudden two other girls show up. The three children dance while the dog sings the majority of the song I didnt get it
The song titled Security was probably my favorite of them all and it also caught my sons attention. This one also mimicked a lot of the things my son does regarding his own security blanket. Through the majority of this video we follow a little girl that loves to have her blanket with her at all times, shell gladly help with the laundry too but wont give up her blanket for cleaning.
Today I Took My Diapers Off touched base with my son also, but the video showed more of one girl in particular than ever needed to be seen
From here my sons attention waned completely and I ended up watching the video on my own. Overall I was pretty unimpressed with it. Many of the videos feature choreography with young children in it. It was very obvious that little time was put into the video and the preparation for it. At the end of one video you can hear adults saying good job and clapping off camera after they finish a choreographed scene which had numerous children in it.
The video is also well dated. I cringe when I see early 90s clothing in anything. This is more pronounced in some videos more than others. The DVD case doesnt clearly state when the video was made and the copyright is for 2003, but Id say based on hair-style and other clues within the video it is from the early nineties.
Absolutely top-notch a treat for the pre-school set. - Los Angeles Times
What? This set-up isnt that fantabulous to me. Aside from raving reviews its also won the Parents Choice Gold Medal, TV Guide Best Kids Videos and National Parenting Publications Award.
If little else works for this video its just the sight of seeing other children play and notice things that the child watching does on a regular basis. I didnt care for the choreographed parts of the videos because many times the kids looked lost, they were starring at the person next to them or obviously trying to mimic steps as they were showed to them by someone off camera. The videos do feature children just playing or doing what children do as I would put it. These scenes come off much better to me, because it shows the kids in their natural state. The Security video is done in this manner and is probably the best and most easily related to by the younger crowd that would watch this video.
Overall Im at a loss as to why this video would have been so massively popular. Im sure it retailed for more in its hay-day and its obviously a low-budget, bang-it out and charge them type of video. This video isnt all bad, dont get me wrong, but there isnt anything exceptional about it either.
