I purchased BabySongs when my first daughter was about 6 months old. Believe it or not, I may have to purchase a new copy, we have literally worn it out in 3 years. My first daughter didn't get "hooked" on it till she was a little over a year, but my second was mesmerized at 7 months. She was clapping along with "Shout and Whisper" by 9 months and now, at 19 months begs for me to play "songs" for her.
This adorable video features a combination of toddlers, "big" kids, animation, and puppetry which seems to steal the heart of most toddlers. The songs relate to toddlers concerns, including "My Mommy Comes Back" which features kids leaving their moms, having fun at preschool or with Grandma, and then mom returning home, just as promised. My 3 year old repeated this to herself over and over her first month in preschool, and actually told me that the kids who cried for their moms "must not have seen BabySongs".
Another great song is "Today I Took My Diapers Off" featuring toddlers enjoying thier potty seats. It is not graphic, but shows the kids getting on and off thier little potty, and putting diapers in the drawer for the "little babies". It encourages kids to enjoy being a "big kid" but doesn't seem to put any pressure on them.
The music is lively and the folks featured, both child and adult, all have bright clothes and happy smiles. The tunes tend to stick with you all day, which is great for the kids, a little irritating for mom and dad. The props are cheerful, and the puppetry creative. There is a big fuzzy dancing dog, a rubber (ugly) thing from outer space in a bubble bath, and a person puppet that "sleeps till the morning" (a good skill for all kids and puppets to learn).
The video is 30 minutes which allows you to have a minute or two to yourself, but not so long that you feel like your are parking your kids to let the tube babysit. The volume level on the video is low, which is nice compared to the blaring TV stations of today.
