HOME FRIES: Dark comedy. First time director Dean Parisot hits a home run with his charming and devilish satire, “Home Fries”, a film about budding love, illicit sex, and the strange ties that bind a mother to her sons.
In the center of this small town whirlwind is Sally Jackson (Drew Barrymore). Pregnant by an older married man, and working her heart out at the Burger-Matic, Sally holds her head up and her spirits high. Little does she know that the father of her child is about to be scared to death by his own stepsons. Literally scared to death. Devoted beyond good sense to their mother (Catherine O’Hara), helicopter pilots Dorian and Angus (Luke Wilson and Jake Busey) just try and put a little fright into dear old stepdad. Unfortunately, their plan proves a bit too effective, and dad’s cheatin’ heart can’t stand the pressure.
But when the boys notice interference on their helicopter radio, they fear there may be a witness to their crime. Trying to tie loose ends, their search lands them at Burger-Matic where Dorian goes undercover to determine if Sally could possibly know anything. Sparks fly and Dorian is quickly smitten with the vivaciously sweet mother-to-be. And neither is wise to their ties that bind.
The charming love story that is the basis for this film is punctuated by the insanity of the people surrounding Sally and Dorian. Angus is a loose cannon that craves his mother’s love and acceptance. Except that mother is a heartless, evil wacko. And Sally’s boozing papa ain’t too normal himself. If you don’t take this film at face value, and just sit back and enjoy it’s wackiness and charm, it will be a fun ride. Co-starring Shelley Duvall. Warner Brothers and Time Warner. Rated PG-13. 105 minutes. ***
