I don't know why so many people don't like Home Fries, it's a great movie. Sure, the trailer even says it's a sweet romantic comedy, and that's not all it is. Well, to tell ya' the truth, it's kind-of like "Godfather" meets "You've Got Mail".
Yeah, it's kind of odd, but besides the kind of awkward plot, it's an excellent movie.
The story is that there is this family who consists of Mrs. Lever, Dorian, Angus and the step-dad Lever. Well, Mrs. Lever finds out that her husband is having an affair, and she goes crazy and asks her sons to kill him. Okay, you say, Mafia mrs. But, then while the boys are killing their dad, they hear interference on their headphones, and they get worried that someone heard what they were doing. The interference turns out to be from the local BurgerMatic, where Sally works. Dorian gets a job to find out if they actually heard anything, and subsequently falls in love with Sally, and to his dismay, turns out to the person that his late step-dad had an affair with, and she's carrying his child. I won't tell you the end, but it is pretty creepy.
I liked this movie because I really don't like romantic comedies that much. Being a girl, I know I'm suppossed to, but I just don't. I get really bored. TO tell you the truth, I actually like action movies that involve nice people. I don't really like it when the guy's a jerk or an idiot who has no nice side at all. But, in "Home Fries" they develop Dorian to be such a nice guy that he's interesting to see in action type situations.
The acting in HF was amazing. The Lever family, sans Dorian, are weird murderers, that just baffle you. But, they act weird very well. Mrs. Lever, played by SCTV vet Catherine O'Hara, is psycho and O'Hara does an excellent job playing that calm, but always psycho lady. Let's not forget Ms. Barrymore as Sally. She does such a great job playing her, calm sweet and innocent. I'm not really that big of a Drew fan, but I did like her in this movie.
The part that I liked most about HF is that the plot isn't stale and predictable like most movies like this. Just for the purpose of continuing my review, I have to tell you more about the plot. The mother finds out who her husband is having the affair with and then orders her sons to annihilate her. Dorian loves her, but Angus has no feelings towards her. THEN, she saws that Dorian was her favorite and Angus gets very upset and thinks that he has to kill Sally now. That part of the movie was very suspenseful.
I think that the character development in HF is amazing. The Mrs. Lever and Angus are always changing, being nice to the public and being murderous in private. Sally just advances, becoming more mature as she meets Dorian, who does the same thing.
There was only one thing I didn't really like about this movie was the music. Sure there was action music during the suspenseful scenes, but sometimes right after the danger's gone, the music will turn to 50's pop tunes. Just a little odd.
I think that anyone that DOESN'T like romantic comedies would like this movie. It's like a guy version of rom-coms (hehe, I made that up. Sorry, I'll continue). There's guns, fellas, and big cool helicopters. OOOOOOH. And girls, there's the whole kissing, falling in love thing. Awwwww.
Go see it!
