Originally this was a rental to bridge the gap between my friend's tastes and my own. She's a Drew Barrymore fan and I love Luke Wilson. It was a night for a fluffy movie, and no one wanted to think about anything. The sunny cover had us all believing we were in for what we expected (to be terribly redundant about things).
Happily, Home Fries was not the fluff piece we'd expected. Instead, a dark comedy stuffed to the gills with unfortunate turns and complications glowed on the TV screen. In the same vein as Bottle Rocket and Rushmore (all of which contain various Wilson brothers), Home Fries is bust-a-gut funny at the most unexpected times. I don't think most people know how to appreciate it, unfortunately, expecting another Never Been Kissed or Blue Streak and this, thankfully, is nothing like either.
Don't watch this movie if you expect it to feel like the cover looks. Don't watch it if you want to see Drew Barrymore act cute and wink a lot, she does, but it's not the movie's main feature. Don't watch this movie if you get offended at stupid things people do. But seriously, watch it if you like things that are funny in the best way.
