I've been a big SNL fan for a few years now, but I'll be the first to admit that most of the film adaptations blow. HARD. This isn't exactly a comedic gem, more like a comedic cubic zirconium. It ranges from incredibly inept and lame to side splittingly hilarious.
The always funny Will Ferrell and the almost always funny Chris Kattan play brothers Steve and Doug Butabi, clubhoppers by night, plastic flower salesmen by day. The skit on SNL was pretty much a one-trick pony, so it was nice to see the whole skit elaborated on. The plot is some nonsense about two stores and two families being brought together by a wedding. The humor isn't in the plot, it's in the one-liners and situations. Also, the music really adds to the movie, "Private Dancer" while Steve and Doug are at odds, "Secret Garden" after the wedding scene. The Jerry Maguire spoof is pretty funny, too.
However, some jokes are overused, and some are just pathetically bad. Overall, this is a good but not great movie, but I don't think it could've been much funnier regardless, because it IS just a movie about two lame clubhoppers.
