Saturday Night Live seems to breed some of the funniest people alive! And with this movie we are exposed to a few more comedians to watch out in the future!
This movie is a spin-off of one of the SNL skits where two socially inept guys are in a dance club, trying to impress the women and then enjoying a few seconds of ‘dancing’ with them. The dance consists of a bunch of body contact that resembles a rock stuck in the spin cycle of a washing machine!
The movie, featuring Chris Kattan (House on Haunted Hill) and Will Ferrell, is very entertaining for any SNL fan. It contains an SNL lineup of, not only Kattan and Ferrell, but Colin Quinn and Molly Shannon. Other actors appearing in the film are Michael Duncan (The Green Mile), Loni Anderson and Richard Grieco (21 Jump Street).
With this star line-up, we get the ups and downs of two brothers, Steve (Will Ferrell) and Doug (Chris Kattan) Butabi, who are trying to find a place for themselves in this world. Steve will do just about anything that his shorter brother will tell him. He convinces him that he’s very attractive and he doesn’t like Emily (Molly Shannon), the daughter of a successful lamp shop owner.
After failing to get into the hottest night club, The Roxbury, the boys set on a mission to open their own nightclub. Their nightclub will look like a club on the outside and the street on the inside. Why not entertain the crowd waiting to get in? With the help of Richard Grieco, who plays himself in the movie, they meet the owner of the Roxbury. They become entwined with two money hungry girls who think they are loaded because they are with the owner of the Roxbury. With these girls, they lose their virginity in 42 seconds! They give each other high fives after the climatic moment. The owner really takes to the brothers but the brothers are fooled by his limo driver (Colin Quinn) into believing that owner doesn’t remember them and could care less about them.
I have by no means told you the ending or even most of the funny moments within the movie. Just tried to get your feet wet. This is a true comedy that has a slight serious turn in the movie but never loses its comedic intention. I’m sure there was a life lesson somewhere buried in the movie but I was laughing too much to catch it! If you’re a fan of SNL, don’t miss this movie! Oh….the director of A Night at the Roxbury is an Southern Illinois University graduate, which is my school. Had to make the plug!
If you want a sore jaw from laughing, grab this movie!
