I saw this movie because it was at my library to borrow. I have seen the skit of the Butabi brothers on "Saturday Night Live". It is about two pathetic losers who roam clubs all night looking to pick up women.
The movie begins with the skit, Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan roaming the clubs of Los Angeles (the fancy variety) looking to pick up women. By day they are employed by their father who owns a plant business on posh Rodeo drive (or somewhere in Beverly Hills). The father calls them two lazy jerks with no ambition but to roam the clubs at night. The clubs are their passion and they have no real interest in their rich father's business. Next door is a lamp business. The daughter who works there is played by Molly Shannon. She tries to go out with the Will Ferrell's character. She is in fine comedic form here.
Some of the scenes are funny. When the Butabi's try to get into the Roxbury they are repeatedly "bounced" by the bouncer. However Richard Grieco playing himself finally gets them in because he bumps into their van. He doesn't want to pay for the wreckage so he does them this favor. The Butabi's are introduced to the owner of the Roxbury. It is very funny as the brothers still seem like two pathetic jerks. The actors are consistent in making them seem awkward and out of place in the coolest hangout in town. They also eventually score in bed with two hookers they pick up at the Roxbury.
The movie becomes alittle long and tiresome as one Butabi goes to the altar with Molly Shannon's character and leaves her stranded there only to reunite with his brother to pursue their nightclub ambitions. When they meet again the music from "Jerry Maguire" starts playing and one says "You complete me." It gets alittle stupid here. The Butabi's finally realize their ambition by the movie's end when their idea for a nightclub comes to fruition.
I hope there is no sequel to this movie. The movie has expanded well in developing the characters and story line of the two cliched jerks. The Butabi parents were notably funny two. Loni Anderson plays Mrs. Butabi. SNL fans should like this movie.
