Well, yes, to promote his special and I didn't even mention his new book. Plus I read a bad review of it by an epinions member and I rose to the challenge! :-)

I wonder what could've possibly inspired you to review this now? It's so blatant isn't it? Jankp, I know how your mind works.

Yes, actually Hitch took his time setting up most of his movies and it can be boring sometimes until halfway. Thanks for the comment!

sounds like it might be a fun watch.
Tell ya the truth, Jan, Alfred Hitchcock has to be the most over-hyped director since Orson Welles. I cringe when I read the slavish unqualified endorsements of some fairly good films like Rear Window and Vertigo. These films were not brought down from the mountain by Moses no matter what people say. I found both to be watchable but underwhelming with the praise that has been lavished on them largely unjustified. Dial M for Murder is another. Bob Cummings, you gotta be kidding! Psycho is the best of the bunch and it has a huge amount of kitschy stuff like John Gavin, Martin Balsam, and Simon Oakland that stimulate unintentional laughter in me when I see them. Bernard Herrmann's score is the real star of Psycho, well that, AND Janet Leigh's generous natural endowments. :-)

Messed up the ending? I don't know about that. If you like complete resolutions, no mysteries, it would be. :-) That's life, though. And yes, we're all different.

Excellent post about an intriguing flick... (Reply to this comment)

...that I enjoyed despite my preconceived reservations. I was unaware of the tiff over criticism that he simply re-made Rear Window, and found your inclusion of Reeve's retort to be very interesting.
Nicely done.

the original did that too. I'm not saying that someone should pull a Gus Van Sant with this project, I'm just saying it could have been done a lot better than it was, starting with the casting

I just HATE this film!!! I wrote up a review of it but you know, a lot of how I felt was based on my love of the original!
I wish they would just have made a different film but THEY did call it a remake and it was a shame because they even messed up the ending! A totatly different film with the same concept but far away from the original would have went over a lot better.
I too admire the man and how he has handled himself since the accident, but that didn't affect how I felt about the film. I figured that his fans would enjoy it from that angle and I know people that loved it like you did. I guess that is what makes the world such an interesting place to live! :o)

Why remake a film to be exactly like the original? I like how this one focuses more on the terror of being physically challenged, the frustration and humiliation of it. Reeve couldn't have been more compelling. Sorry you didn't like the 'retelling' as Reeve put it.
Peace,

About Reeve's comments, but I don't think it was either a very good remake or movie on it's own merits, whatever it was.
If I had gone at doing this film, the casting would be simple: Nicholas Cage; Elizabeth Shue in the Stewart / Kelly roles; with Billy Bob Thorton as Lars Thorwald; and I don't know who I'd cast as the nurse. But whoever did it would have to have strong chemistry with Cage.
You'd also need a director who could infuse this with a strong understanding and execution of the many subtle details a movie like the original Rear Window had - so much subtext was in the original that just wasn't in the Reeve version.
If anything, this version is a good example of what not to do when remaking a film.
Cheers,
- Steve =)
