Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I have to admit I didn’t see The Matrix until after it was in the theatre. Like a fool, I thought it was a movie like Predator or something like that. I cannot say how absolutely wrong I am.
Of course you have seen the 360-degree shot that has been used in the Gap commercials. You know, freeze-frame and them a 360-degree spin around? This is the film that utilized it first. The Wachowski Brothers really knew what they were doing. The plot is basically this: what if the world around you was really just a big computer program? Would you want to know the truth or would you want to keep on living the lie? Thus begins Keanu Reeves adventure. Starting as Tom Anderson and morphing into Neo, he gives a very convincing performance. Laurence Fishburne, who burst onto the scene as Ike Turner in “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” and has turned in even better performances each time he is on screen, doesn’t disappoint either as Morpheus, the man who is looking for “the one”. Carrie Ann Moss plays Trinity and Joe Pantoliano (lately playing Ralphie on The Sopranos) plays Cypher. Both are great.
The special effects are almost a whole other cast member. They are truly special special effects. When you realize that one shot in this film was the most copied and parodied shot for an entire year, then you start to realize the reach of this film.
Give it a rent or check it out on cable. You’ll be happy that you did, because this is truly an original and interesting film.
