Election does not deserve to be put in the category of another formula high school comedy. It is made by MTV Films, so I can only wonder how it turned out so good.
Matthew Broderick plays your typical popular high school teacher, who behind the exterior, is deeply troubled. He experiences an extreme case of role conflict throughout the film. His goal is to have the popular dumb jock (Chris Klein) beat the annoying overachieving go-getter (Reese Witherspoon). The film runs from there and you can pretty much figure out what is going to happen, but the movie just flows so well.
Broderick and Witherspoon are great, but Klein really shines. He has one line that mentions "hot dogs" that will get me going every time I hear it.
The best aspect of Election is its simple plot that is filled with so much meaning and irony. On the outside the character's fit all the stereotypes (the dumb jock, the annoying go-getter, the troubled high school teacher), but I found all of them to be quite complex and all likable. You have to look beyond the simple premise of the movie and try not to lump it in with all the Freddie Prinze movies. It is a satire of middle-class suburban high school life, but also examines moral and ethical issues. We see what really drives the characters to do what they do.
The best movie of 1999 because it is unbelievably original and also realistic.
