I'll be perfectly blunt--I rented this only because I wanted to see an Angelina Jolie movie that I hadn't seen before. I did not know if it honestly would be that great quality of a flick, but i was happily surprised.
John Cusack, Billy Bob Thorton, Angelina, and Cate Blanchett all deliver sterling performances and the script is artfully written [though the plot rather falls apart at the end]. The characters are very well developed and original, something I always enjoy seeing.
The movie explores the profession of air traffic controller and the sorts of people who--and those who cant--handle that pressure of having people's lives in your hands every second. Cusack plays a hot-shot controller, who is the best until Thorton's character comes in and begins to consistently show him up--not only professionally but personally as well.
It all comes to a head over Thorton's young and very beautiful wife [played wonderfully by Angelina--a character that could have been utilized a lot more--and this is not a biased sentiment because Im fond of her, but one that everyone who I've spoken to who has seen the film agrees with] and the effect adultery has on marriages.
The only serious complaint I have about this film is how the plot seems to unravel at the end, becoming more far-fetched and delerious...I felt a bit cheated by the ending, actually. Something with such a great beginning and meat should not end with a fizzle...
Though billed as a comedy, the film is much too intense for that, and I'd say its more interested in the psyche to be truly a comedy.
