Over the Edge 1998 was anything but spectacular

Written: Apr 02 '05
  • User Rating: OK
  • Action Factor:
  • Special Effects:
  • Suspense:
Pros:The main event, SUNNY, DX, Tennessee Lee
Cons:Most the matches, Sable speaking, no guitar shots, Vader unmasking, Shamrock absent
The Bottom Line: The mainevent was good but didn't save the show. Like most the 1998 PPV's it was nothing too special for the attitude era. 2 stars 1/2

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

1998 was a great year for the WWF but on a whole their PPV's were not at the level of the preceding and following years of the attitude era. Over the Edge was definatly no exception and was actually below the standards of the WWF PPV's of '98. Match breakdown (out of 10):

LOD 2000 w/Sunny and Droz defeated Skull and 8-Ball w/Chainz via pinfall - The match was simply a DUD. The DOA were slow and useless, the LOD definitely showed their age as well. Lots of rest hold in this one and it dragged on for far too long. Plus to make it worse the LOD were wearing those embarrassing hockey goalie helmets. The only highlight was Sunny...and she was one hell of a highlight. Also to note the crowd was incredibley into LOD (well their entrance atleast) which adds to the rating. (2 out of 10)

Jeff Jarrett w/Tennessee Lee defeated Steve Blackman via pinfall - Well Tennesse Lee and Jarrett's old Double J entrance can boost the rating of any match add Blackman's karate routine to the equation and it sets the stage for a classic. This match unfortunatley did not meet those expectations. The wrestling was decent, great compared to the last match, but the moves didn't string together well. Both wrestlers are fairly good but defenitly don't work great together. Add 1 to the rating for an appearence by Snow and head, minus 1 for no guitar shot. (5 out of 10)

Marc Mero defeated Sable via pinfall - This was no match but Sable was damn hot. Unfortunatley for me I had to listen to her speak, and well...she makes Blackman look like the king of charisma. Mero is a smooth playa and totally showed up Sable with a hell of a move(both their reactions after the bout are beautiful). This match doesn't qualify for a rating though.

Kaientai w/Yamaguchi San defeated Taka Michinoku and Bradshaw via pinfall - Almost no crowd reaction to this match, which affected it. Was an ok match, Bradshaw is actually a great contrast in a match like this. A lot of the moves performed in this match made it seem like the competitors were trying to show off their craziest moves rather then good wrestling. Although there was a fair bit of good wrestling. Some of Kaientai's moves are amazing. The most impressive wrestler was MEN's TEIOH. (5 out of 10)

Rocky Maivia defeated Faarooq via Pinfall, retaining the WWF Intercontinental Title - I'm not gonna rate this match either since it was so short, and barely a match. Little offense to start out, Faarooq thinks he wins but doesn't. Then a little offense by Rocky and it's over. It was actually sort of good not to make it longer since they can not make a full match entertaining together. The NOD needs to be brought back to the WWE, Mark Henry can run it.

Kane w/Paul Bearer defeated Vader (Vader unmasks) - This match was pretty much the end of Vader in the WWE. Vader got in a little...little bit of offense but it was pretty much a squash by Kane. Vader's quote at the end of the match was actually quite hilarious, even swearing. This match definalty looses points for it's predictability I mean Kane was a machine, Vader had barely been used and most importantly Vader had been seen constantly over his career without a mask, Kane never. (3.5 out of 10)

The Nation (Owen Hart, D-Lo Brown, and Mark Henry) w/ the Godfather of the Nation, Kama Mustafa defeated D-Generation X (Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Jesse James, and Billy Gun) w/X-Pac and Chyna via pinfall - This match was fairly boring. Both factions were over nicely with the crowd. A few of my favorites were in it, D'lo and the NAO. Styling points for the ending, quite suspensful actually. (7 out of 10).

Stone Cold Steve Austin w/The Undertaker defeated Dude Love w/ Vince and the Stooges, retaining the WWF World Title - The crowd loved Austin as usual. The odds definatly looked stacked against Stonecold, Vince as the ref alone made it look impossible for Austin. Great brawling in this match. Austin shows why at one time he was actually one of the best technical wrestlers around. Not a weak match for Foley either, he put out a good showing and he definatly could still at this point be in a good match that wasn't hardcore (although this was). Undertaker makes the count for Austin after Vince gets knocked out, obviously Vince would never give Austin the 3. Solid match though. (9 out of 10).

31.5 out of 60...just barely passes
