The Mummy is your typical Hollywood action/adventure movie...except with mummies. That is to say, it was boring, predictable, and not too good.
At first, I thought that maybe they were going to pull off a halfway decent movie....the plot seemed promising. But after that, the special effects and glossy Hollywood action scenes took over, and that was all she wrote. The fight scene at the end between Fraser and a host of mummies was movie schmaltz at its finest.
One note on the special effects: ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) still does some good work, but you can still pretty much tell what's fake and what's not (even though they claim otherwise on the DVD). The effects in the Matrix were much better...and even some of the effects in the Prince of Egypt (an animated feature) were more realistic.
The coup de gras: they left open the possibility of a sequel. Oh happy day.
