I had more fun with this movie because it was so full of different ‘stars’ and all their actions played so well against each other. After all how many times do you get equal screen time for Gena Rowlands, Dennis Quaid, Sean Connery, Anthony Edwards, Angelina Jolie, Madeleine Stowe, Jay Mohr, Gillian Anderson, Jon Stewart, and Ellen Burstyn. I guess this would fall into the dramatic comedy genre.
Written and directed by Willard Carroll, I wonder why this film remained a sleeper. With this cast, and the fun script, I’m surprised it has remained so hidden away. Connery added a bit of comedic interlude with his wife, Gena Rowlands, as they rehash an old ‘love’ of his. He just seemed so at home in this film, one part stands out with his playful puppy attitude when Gena tells him it is time for them to go to bed.
You follow Jolie, Stowe, Anderson and Burstyn through the movie and their lives with all its ups and downs. Jolie is leaving one relationship and trying to start a new one. It seems impossible, but she is quite determined. I don't think the poor boy realizes what has hit him.
Stowe is in a boring marriage and catching a little tingle on the side. The side piece is married as well so does that make it ok? hmmmm .... Basically all she is looking for is a little attention from her deadbeat husband.
Anderson is the one that isn't looking for love in any places but it is chasing her anyway. But first she has to resolve a complicated past situation that involves Burstyn and her son, who is dying from AIDS.
This is a great film about love - finding it and losing it - and all the ups and downs involved in life. All the stories are resolved, you aren’t left hanging. And where the stories start and where they end are two entirely different things, even though they are so closely related. It’s a great one to let you know that it’s possible to go ahead and take one more chance.
Angelina Jolie won the NBR Award, Best Breakthrough Performance and she did an outstanding job.
