I passed on watching this movie several other times that it was on HBO. However, one Saturday morning it was the only game in town, besides cartoons.
I really thought I was going to hate this movie. The number one reason I thought I'd hate it is that it's a war movie set in the future in space. I don't like futuristic movies. Why? I can never follow the plot. Every species has a weird name, there's always complicated nonsensical technical jargon being thrown around and everything looks dark.
I can't follow anything more complicated that the original "Star Trek" tv series.
That said, I'm not even going to try to explain the plot in depth. It had something to do with
Freddie Prinze Jr. and some friends trying to keep the bad aliens from destroying earth.
Saffron Burrows ("Deep Blue Sea") is the wing commander - the top officer in charge of the fighter pilots. I like that they made a woman the top commander. There's also a bit of a love story involving her and Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kind of like Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in "Top Gun".)
Matthew Lillard ("Scream") is the gonzo pilot friend of Prinze.
When a pilot dies, they say that person never existed and refuse to talk about the dead person. Well not Prinze. He thinks that wrong and says so. Of course that doesn't endear him to his fellow pilots.
Eventually there's a big space fight at the end and the good guys win, of course.
So, do I recommend this movie? No, not unless you're a really big fan of Prinze or Lillard. I'm going to give it a 2 out of 5, simply because it was better than I expected, but I liked "Top Gun" a whole lot better.
