Excellent! (Reply to this comment)

The reviewer provides a fresh look at Lola rentt.
The introduction of equifinality as a concept the opposite of the butterfly effect is like opening a door to a large unexplored room. Excellent analogy using the car in traffic example to illustrate the concept of equifinality.
Thanks for a great review.

Very thought provoking indeed! Even stranger still, a review of "The Butterfly Effect" comes in right behind yours on the Just In section. You've definitely given me a few things to think about. This one's going on The List.

you're still guilty of something: the barbaric "quotes" for "quotations."
Not really. The barbaric "quotes" was part of the quotation. The other guy was guilty. The best I could have done would have been to add a "[sic]." Always blame TOG (the other guy)!

I somehow lost that you were quoting. My fault, entirely. But you're still guilty of something: the barbaric "quotes" for "quotations."

truncating adrenaline to adrenal
Thanks. Corrected.
As for the opening quotation from T. S. Eliot, perhaps if you don't think that it is relevant, your understanding of the film-maker's intention has failed
No, I think the opening quotation from Eliot highly relevant to understanding the film. I merely quoted a reviewer who claimed it was not while arguing that it most obviously is. Sorry if my point was unclear for you.

With equifinality, you have faith that you'll end up where you were meant to be.
Yes, and even better -- where you take yourself by the exercise of your human will and effort. Sure, chance events can mess up the best laid plans of mice and men, but in the meantime, each of us has a lot of control over our own destiny.

Thanks. I apologize if my review came across as butt-kicking! I hate when people do that! I just got kind of irritated after reading a ton of reviews that seemed to reduce life to "What the hell, nothin' matters!"

Epigrams (Reply to this comment)

Reading your review takes almost as long as watching the movie, evenwith you truncating adrenaline to adrenal (I thought the latter meant "close to the kidney") and quotations to quotes...
As for the opening quotation from T. S. Eliot, perhaps if you don't think that it is relevant, your understanding of the film-maker's intention has failed (not that all the male professional critics you derogate are thereby right!).

Equifinality (Reply to this comment)
by beckytcy
I'd never heard the word "equifinality" before, but I think I like it better than the concept of the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect seems more pessimistic and overdramatic in that if you change one minor thing, you could ruin your life. With equifinality, you have faith that you'll end up where you were meant to be. I'm not at all religious, but I choose to believe in equifinality to ease my mind.
Wonderful review! I saw this movie a couple of years ago, and you brought up so many interesting themes.

RLR is the first Tykwer film i came across & i think i wanted to see it from the flutterbye effect viewpoint. Having since seen some of his other films, pre- & post-RLR, i've more or less come across to your take . . . but am way too lazy to do anything about it . . . i need someone to kick my butt harder.
Great job! ...t-þoo
