I saw the movie Tarzan, basically because I make it a point to see most all Disney animated movies. I can suggest others to start a similar tradition. It's fun to think about with families, girl/boy friends, something like . . . "only a couple days 'till the next Disney flick is out!" It adds fun to the experience, which makes even mediocre movies worthwhile.
The movie itself:
Some of the good points of this movie, are it's emphasis on family ties-it promotes values such as sticking together as a family, & family members helping each other when in need.
Also, it has a strong theme of accepting those that are different. Tarzan is undoubtedly different than the ape family he lives in, & it cycles through his acceptance by the head of the clan, as well as with his peer groups. I think that this message is important to recognize in today's world of diversity.
As far as Disney films go, this movie was also heavy on the action. The animation of Tarzan's jungle movements were exciting & attention grabbing. I think this makes the movie attractive to boys & girls alike. The animator based Tarzan's jungle swinging on the movements of skateborders, mimicing the jumps, spins, & other ariel feats. It was pretty exciting to see him fly. Given the popularity of skating with kids today, it really creates a contemporary dipiction of this historic fictional character.
The music. The music in this movie was excellent. Just the name, Phil Collins, stands on its own, not to mention the Grammy for "You'll be in My Heart." The film is true to Disney style with moving musical scores.
Comedy. Another quality common to Disney films is the lighthearted comedic style. Tarzan was no different. There are always those comic relief characters that keep the plot from getting too thick for the kids. This one took the form of an elephant named Tantor. He's a pretty funny guy. Oh, yeah, & did I mention Rosie O' Donnell? If you know anything about her, you can really see her personality in the film. Pretty funny, with a lot of personality.
Some of the cons of the movie are that, for one thing, it's a bit short. If memory serves, it's just shy of an hour & a half. I think they could have drawn out some parts in a little more detail (The introduction, maybe.)
Something else, the beginning was just packed with TOO much activity. There was so much happening. There were two stories going on at the same time, & it basically cycled through the entire process of how Tarzan was left alone, & how he came to be adopted. That was a little too much information for about a 5 minute segment. I thought they tried to say too much in the intro.
Also, if you were planning on watching it with kids, the opening scene is pretty upfront with issues of death & killing. It surprised me, & it's something to watch out for.
Overall, I think that it was a good movie, but not a great one. I recommend you renting it from the local store, but I don't know if it's a keeper. But remember one thing. If you do plan to buy, then be aware that Disney has a funny way of releasing their movies, & then stopping production for a while, & then re-releasing it some years later. So just be aware of that.
