As stated in my profile, currently husband & I are childless (still waiting on the Grandchildren to spoil!) so we do not prefer to watch Disney movies until we can do so from the comfort of our own home. I look forward to the new releases of Disney films on video.
Saturday, I went over to Hollywood Video and bought a copy of the much reviewed Tarzan expecting to be mildly entertained. I collect Disney movies, so even if this one was of the same level as Inspector Gadget, I didn't mind the purchase.
Was I ever Surprised! This movie is a Must See for me! I laughed, I cried, I chuckled, I sniffed. This movie tugged at every emotional chord in my body!
The story is the basic Tarzan story we've all heard or seen. I watched the old black & white Tarzan movies as a kid in the 60's. What this movie has that the other Tarzan stories lacked is a Moral. Actually, there were lots of morals, but the main one that was subtly woven into the plot was that: We Are The Same. In this movie, the obvious comparison was to the Ape/Human aspect. But, his "mother" had him close his eyes, & with your eyes closed & your heart open, the differences went away, & the similarities became very apparent! This is a very valuable lesson that all humans can use when dealing with all other humans!
Rosie O'Donnell's character also portrayed a perfect example of acceptance. It's strange seeing an ape talking with a New York Accent & Attitude! I Loved her character!
The animation of this movie left me dizzy & awed. It almost felt like I could slide on tree branches, or fly through the air with Tarzan. The animators use of expressions was Perfect! There was a lot said with no words at all!
The music carried me away. I love the new mom singing to her newly acquired son, & then Phil Collins taking over & singing the rest of the song to the accompanying instrumental music. My heart swelled with both the song & the animation.
I enjoyed the Disney Characterization of Jane. She was perfect in her open-heartedness & willingness to accept people & animals for what they were. Her Joy of Life was very evident in the character. This joy of life was a perfect foil for the rascal, Tarzan! They made a great team together.
I will treasure this movie in my Disney collection. It will become a family favorite, just like Pete's Dragon! I will enjoy pulling this one out & watching it again & again.
The legend of Tarzan is told in breathtaking fashion from the loss of his parents in Africa to his adoption by a gorilla mother Kala to his rescue of ...More at Family Video
