I rented Tarzan last night, since my husband and I, although sans children, are avid Disney fans and collectors.
It's the story of a little boy whose parents are killed, and he's adopted by a local Mom gorilla. He grows up and eventually meets Jane(voiced by the smashing Minnie Driver) and thus his life teeters on the fence between family and being with his own kind. Will he evolve or stay the tree skateboarding monkey man that he is?
Ok, here we go.
Pros:
1. It's Disney. Even if you're a black-hearted old Scrooge, don't you even lie and say you don't get pathetic warm fuzzies when you watch Disney.
2. The soundtrack. Phil Collins did a great job in coming up with something great, the child of funky percussion and sappy warm fuzzy.
3. The voices. Rosie O-Donnell is loud and obnoxious in that appealing way. Glenn Close has a sweet serious Mom monkey voice. Minnie Driver has great appeal as Jane.
Cons:
1. I'll momentarily jump on the bandwagon and say "Parental Discretion Advised" in terms of violence. Granted, it was tastefully done, but I even raised an eyebrow at the thought of a half-pint watching it.
2. Hello, I realize that Disney is far from real, but the fact that Tarzan could speak civil English after, say, an afternoon made me groan.
3. Haven't we had Disney do the "Boy adopted by wild creatures and needs to end up with humans" already?
Going with my cons list, I'm wondering who the next minority will be to be abused by Disney in their lovable way. We've had Aladdin the Persian boy, Pocahontas the Indian in her little canoe with her braids, Mulan the Asian girl with her trusty lucky cricket, etc. etc. I was thinking of suggesting to Disney of perhaps going for a lesbian Eskimo girl, living in her igloo and dreaming of true love.
Putting my digs aside, it's DISNEY people. Would they steer you wrong?
Rent it. You'll laugh out loud and your kiddies will love it.
