The musical theater is alive and well and living in celluloid form, cartoon-style, with Walt Disney's summer treat, Tarzan. Whether you're looking for a date movie, a parent-and-child outing, or a guilty pleasure, I highly recommend you see it!
Disney has given us yet another version of a formulaic retelling of classic stories, but Tarzan is a quality flick with excellent attributes. It soars above the Disney formula and packs in honest emotion and heart. This is not your typical sappy cartoon.
It was inevitable Disney would do their own Tarzan. The Edgar Rice Burroughs masterwork of literary fantasy has inspired over 30 Hollywood films and countless merchandise. Never before, however, has Graystoke been cast in a jungle extravaganza.
Take the Disney recipe for success (and it's all here in Tarzan): One wide-eyed hero and heroine, a falling-in-love subplot, a super-evil villain, loveable and bumbling animal sidekicks, dazzling animation magic, and show tunes galore. Phil Collins provides the musical treats -- watch for the wonderful scene where the gorillas and elephants enter the humans' camp and musically wreak havoc. The voice of Minnie Driver gives Jane a sassy, classy, brassy edge. And Disney studios gives us some great ooh-aah visual treats, my favorites being incredible "tree surfing" chase scenes, misty waterfalls, and computer-generated rolling seas.
