James Bond celebrates his 38th year in films with his latest entry, the 21st in the apparently endless series. It gives nothing away to mention that the film ends with the promise/statement/threat that "James Bond will return", which is much like saying that the sun will rise tomorrow.
The first Bond film that I remember seeing in the theaters was "Moonraker", way back in 1979. That was a long time ago, but from what I remember of it, Bond hasn't changed at all. He's still a sophisticated, debonair British agent. He's still forty-something, with a tendency for droll one-liners and bedding any desirable woman who appears on the set. He dresses well, and his hair never gets mussed despite the constant trouble he gets into. He narrowly avoids death several dozen times per movie. If it wasn't for him, terrorists would have long since blown up the world. Even with his best efforts, things still blow up all around him.
Pierce Brosnan is better cast for Bond than Timothy Dalton ever was. He lacks the warmth and charm that Sean Connery gave the role. He's closer to Roger Moore in style, with a wry smirk passing for emotion. The results are all the same though: action without suspense, special effects and stunts for their own sake, femme fatale women, terrorist villains who must be stopped. And a sexy title song sung by a woman. I won't bother with the usually requisite plot summary, as you've seen all this before.
The cast should be mentioned, though. Denise Richards, who looks like a supermodel, strains credibility as a doctor in nuclear physics. Sophie Marceau is the spoiled daughter of an oil pipeline magnate. Robert Carlyle is the baddie burdened with history's slowest moving bullet lodged in his skull. Robbie Coltrane is a well-fed casino owner. Judi Dench is a sour-faced British intelligence boss. John Cleese is the new gadget maker, taking over from Desmond Llewelyn.
Perhaps the film should have been titled "Enough is Enough Already". Instead of seeing "The World is Not Enough", why not see a good Bond film, such as "From Russia With Love". Or "The Thomas Crown Affair", in which Brosnan is Bond-like but supported with a better cast, script and story. (32/100)
The World is Not Enough is an exhilarating but sophisticated, action-packed adventure. With insight and intelligence, the producers, writers, director...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
