Steve Martin's "Bowfinger" is an intelligent farce that satirizes action movies, Hollywood producers, and Scientology--the very fabric of movie making itself. Martin, who stars, also wrote and directed, and made the brilliant choice to cast Eddie Murphy as both an action star and his dim-witted look-alike.
The movie starts a little slowly, as producer Bobby Bowfinger (Martin) reads a "brilliant" script for an action film called "Chubby Rain" and sets about assembling a cast and crew. The catch is that he needs action-star Kit Ramsey (Murphy) in the movie to get the green light. Ramsey refuses, so Bowfinger and his cohorts set about shooting the movie around him anyway, surprising him in public without revealing the camera. As his confusion and paranoia grow, the movie grows funnier and funnier.
"Bowfinger" includes many delightful elements, from the movie memorabilia that decorates Bowfinger's house (he apparently directed a short film about the Yugo) to Heather Graham's performance as a no-talent nymphomaniac. But the film's most interesting feature is Eddie Murphy. He's at the top of his game, willing to satirize everything from the action superstar he himself has been, to the potentially career-ending humiliation he endured only a few years ago. Moreover, his other character in the film, Jiff, is quite a creation--he's a guy who's a little bit dense, who aspires to run errands for a living. Yet when you see Jiff terrified after having to run across a highway, your heart goes out to him--Murphy's actually quite good as a straight actor.
Murphy has, in the past, been something of a phenomenon. "48 Hrs." and "Trading Places" caught the national mood and made him a superstar. "Bowfinger" hasn't caught on in the same way, but Murphy's only getting funnier with time.
