Barbelith's Full Review: South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
It's not often a cartoon TV series makes a successful transition to the big screen - even less often when it looks like it took about a week to animate it. But then, its not often that a TV series is horribly constrained from being as offensive as it would like by the constrictions of cable television stations.
And how does it choose to manifest its offensiveness? BY MAKING IT A MUSICAL!
The plot is as self-referential and trashy as it is revolutionary - Kenny, Cartman, Kyle and Stan go to the cinema to see the new Terrence and Philip movie "Asses of Fire". But the film is a dodgy "R" rated film (like South Park itself) in which there is VAST amounts of swearing (like South Park) which subsequently has an appalling effect on the poor wee children who have seen it (like, um.... Well, you get the point).
Kyle's Mother (who, we are reminded is a BIG FAT B**CH) decides that Terrence and Philip are evil and forms a group of mothers who manage to get the USA to declare war on their home country Canada, who, we are reminded, are also responsible for Bryan Adams.
It's up to our young heroes to save the day and (it transpires) the world by saving the two Canadian Mirth-Mongers with the aid of their subversive group "La Resistance". In the process, they hope to convince their parents that being mean to the people who make R-rated films is a BAD thing.
With such a stormingly entertaining premise, the film can't really go wrong. The songs are classically entertaining and totally Disney (apart from the large amounts of swearing of course). The characters are unendingly entertaining (although it can help if you are familiar with some of the regulars). And the humour is relentlessly savage, sordid, grotesque and even bizarrely political. In fact I'd probably go as far as to say that it is so far from standard conventions of Hollywood humour and late 20th Century propriety that it pretty much ranks as the most subversive thing you'll have seen for a few years. That is of course if you are prepared to let it sweep you away into the depths of its depravity.
You can't help thinking when you leave the cinema, "How on earth did they get away with that!?" - but I believe you will be saying it in awe rather than in horror...
