The only thing different about this movie is its gimmick. I missed out on seeing this movie in the theatres, but recently watched a full-length screener on VHS from Artisan.
Given the amount of hype surrounding this film, I expected a lot more. What I got though, was disappointing, at best. The movie's directors did a good job of suspending the audience's belief about the whole thing being real, but they failed to include any kind of actionable plot, or even a believable ending.
I suppose that if you didn't know anything about this movie, walked into the theatre and sat down, you'd be quite surprised and walk out amazed, believing it's real. However, the sheer amount of sensationalistic hype and blatant press that accompanied the film's release ruined the whole experience.
Now that the VHS/DVD version is almost upon us (10/26/1999), we can only expect more senseless hype, more directionless marketing, and more sales generated for Artisan.
Blair Witch is a picture-perfect example of a film that goes against the Hollywood grain, somehow becomes successful, and inspires numerous copycats. I'm afraid that all we have to look forward to is more senseless promotion and easily impressionable films of this nature.
