I am interested in movies dealing with the supernatural. So the idea of a documentary made from recovered film dealing with a witch intrigued me. I was particularly excited about the fact that the makers of the film were never seen again. Add the fact that the location is not far from my home made this movie a 'MUST SEE' for me. Boy was I wrong!!!
Three amature film makers take rented equipment to do a class project. They film themselves at home detailing their preparations, at the market buying provisions, and on the road to the location. They interview several 'town's folks' who tell them about the legend of the Blair Witch and a mass murderer of children who was influenced by the witch's departed spirit.
They are soon in the woods looking for evidence of the Historical truth of this legend. It is not long before strange things begin happening. The sound of screaming children, strange rock mounds outside the tent, loud stomping sounds cause the film makers to realize they are not alone in the woods. Who or what is with them is the mystery. Much of the hype surrounding this movie said they were never heard from again. Let's hope not.
First, the movie has been certified as a hoax. This never happened. There is a Burkittsville, Md., but it was never named Blair and there never was a legend of a witch. Nor was there a mass murder of children as portrayed in the movie. The film, besides being a hoax, was also very slow in development of the story. They fear factor was non existent, at least to me. Although the technique of alternating film types (from black and white to color and back) added a resemblance of reality to the movie and the actors were first rate especially for unknowns, it could not overcome the negatives already mentioned.
When I rent or attend a scary movie, I want to be scared. Blair Witch just doesn't do it.
