Let’s take a moment and make the role of the critic that of the Olympic Judge (in the spirit that spectacle going down Down Under that I just don’t have any time or care to watch) watching the gymnastics competition. You have those of us who are the East German judges, who take off points for anything and everything. You have those of us who are the undereducated idiotic judges who give everything a 9.9, and then you have those judges who give certain gymnasts points because they know just how damn tough what they did is.
Now of course, being the harsh critic that I am, I probably would fall into the role of the East German judge, telling every damn film that comes across me that they screwed up on the dismount, but part of me also knows filmmakers, knows the kind of technical proficiency required to do something, and will give big points to a director that does a film that is a stylistic pain incredibly well.
Such is the case with Running Time, Josh Becker’s single-shot thriller about a man who robs the warden of the prison that just released him. No points can be given to Running Time’s originality in story (boy gets released from prison, boy meets old girlfriend, boy pulls off heist with friend and has to choose between friend and old girlfriend), but Becker’s stylistic cleverness must be lauded. The single-shot film is damn near impossible to do (only 5 films have ever pulled it off), and Becker’s Running Time pulls it off without having the hidden cuts being too distracting. He also manages to maintain an incredibly degree of continuity, have his actors hold up remarkably well, and integrates decent storytelling in the midst of it all.
Running Time does have it’s problems, though. Real-time filmmaking lead to incredibly fake-looking violence and hollow acting towards the end. Yet it also leads to a kinetically charged thriller that keeps your attention riveted until the ending, and that has forced this East German judge to crack a smile or two. The result: 70 minutes, non-stop action, a stumble on the dismount, and a 9.0 from this judge.
