My family has roots in Minnesota, and were more than a little amused with "Fargo." So Dad thought we should rent this one, too.
When I first sat down to watch it, I couldn't believe my eyes. I tend to prefer brainy, intellectual films that require in depth analysis after watching (many foreign films fall into this category), so I wasn't expecting much.
The film is set up as a faux-documentary about a beauty pageant. For me, a feminist by background, taking a look at the world of beauty pageants in this light was extremely disturbing and amusing.
The tone of the film is unreal, and the viewer should expect it to be so. This is not really a documentary. And I believe the film directed intended to poke fun at the world of beauty pageants in general, and did so successfully.
Many reviewers did not care for this movie, and so I am (a little) ashamed to say I really did enjoy this film. As long as you don't take it too seriously, and if you can take a joke, and you don't think beauty pageants are an essential part of every American teen's life, you will have a fun time with this film. Ellen Barkin, in particular, is the actress who made this film for me. Kirstie Alley, while not my favorite actress, could have done much better--and her accent wasn't even believable.
If you enjoyed "Pulp Fiction" (and found some of the scenes simultaneously delightfully funny and disturbing) and that genre, you will enjoy this film. Otherwise, stick to Jim Carrey films.
