First off, let’s summarize a little of the plot of this fun, good for a laugh, and to relax kinda movie that is in no way superior to the all time best films out there, but full of that stupid kinda humor, that is so stupid it does tend to make you laugh in parts. This movie takes place in what I believe if I’m correct is Minnesota, where many girls have decided to prep up and get ready to try and gain the title of the new, Sarah Cosmetic’s girl, for their town, state, and then finally the national.
Kristie Alley leads the cast of mostly younger actors, with an okay performance, as the snobby, rich mother of one girl competing, Rebecca Ann Leighman, that the whole town is sure will be rigged to win the pageant. Rebecca is played by the lovely, Denise Richards, (who you'll remember from some hot scenes in "Wild Things") who does a fairly good job at not taking her role to serious. Throughout, the practicing many girls mysteriously start dying, but Amber Adtkins, played by the charming, Kirsten Dunst, is determined to let her mother see her dance, try to win, and most importantly, make her first step to fulfill her dream of being like news reporter, Diane Sawyer. The movie does of course take most issues very lightly and humorous as the girls visit the hospital to butter up the reigning Sarah girl, who became anorexic within the year.
Anyway, of course Rebecca wins amongst a panel of weird, yet perverted judges, (watch out for Mad TV’s, Will Sasso, as the one judge’s crazy son, Hank), but later on a tragic occurrence upon a swan, will pass the title onto Amber. Ya gotta love the line about the 1st parade day outside being "As beautiful as a ho’s ass", though, heh. All through the movie, it seems like bad, ironic, and unexpected, or shall you say lucky events happen to give her the edge and make her the winner. As, in the 2nd competition, there’s a very nasty, but hilarious incident with shellfish.
In the end, after frustrated girls take out some anger, Kristie Alley, who seeks to get revenge on the town of Mount Rose, after a very violent act earlier in the movie, escapes from jail and swat teams allow Amber to finally take advantage of the chance to persue that "dream" of hers.
The recently released to video movie probably doesn’t have the biggest appeal to most audiences if you take a look at the cover and think about the not always so entertaining world of beauty pageants. But, I picked it up the other night, .. and the funny, yet quirky, humor was somewhat entertaining, even though there was slower drawn out spots throughout the movie. I think it was about the highlight of my Saturday night birthday that evening, haha, well besides the SNL performance of Blink 182!!!. Rock on!
It’s no prize of a movie, not a sure Oscar winner, or even the best of acting, but it’s a very fun oriented little movie, that you can be sure to get atleast a few laughs out of the fun and parodies it pokes at the glamorizing yet demeaning, biased ideals of a stereotypically charged world of women in beauty and what pageants are really all about. After all the Ramsey controversy, it’s nice to see something a little less serious related to that topic.
This movie was also kinda nice because besides some of the easily expected outcomes or scenes, there was also some less expected ones that many times turned ironic and still remained somewhat funny.
The one thing I really hated about this movie is how the women talked, .. I guess it was an attempt to play on the joke of them being prissy, stuck up, and having to win or they’d "die",.. but it really made the movie very annoying at times.
So, If you're contemplating whether you should rent this,..for the most part, most probably won't like it, but I think it's safe, if ya like a few laughs to relax to, aren’t a real a fan of pageants, and like to see pretty little girls making fools of themselves. Go out and pick up this rental, I don't think it'll be the most horrible thing you could ever watch. At the least, it should bring a slight smile to your face, or maybe even gross ya out. This movie will either make you "drop dead" laughing or make you "drop dead" with stupidity and boredom, give it a chance and it'll prove okay. Though, it's one you probably don't want to see anymore than once. But, you don't have to agree with me on any of this, to think this opinion is a fair one.
