Drop Dead Gorgeous is a hilarious black comedy (meaning that it contains dark humor, not African Americans) about beauty pageants in small towns and the lengths that some people will go to in order to win. It takes the real-life story of the mother who killed her daughter's competition at a beauty pageant, and blows it all WAY out of proportion.
Practically all of the characters in this movie are NUTS. The two rival competitors are played by Denise Richards (the eye candy from The World is Not Enough), and Kirstin Dunst (the now grown-up girl from Interview With the Vampire). Kirstie Alley plays the mother of Richards, and Ellen Barkin plays the mother of Dunst.
Just how weird are some of these characters? For starters, Dunst's character puts on makeup at the local funeral home. Nice job for a high schooler, don't you think? Denise Richards is constantly shown cleaning, loading, and shooting various rifles and guns, which she says are all birthday presents. Interesting. Kirstie Alley is the mother who once won the beauty pageant and MUST see her daughter win. There is an obese hardware store owner, and his mentally retarded son. Among the judges at this pageant are the hardware store owner, a pedophile who REALLY enjoys seeing all the 'young girls', and a woman who practically never speaks.
The running joke in the movie is all the attempts on the life of Kirstin Dunst. Her mom's trailer is blown up. A tractor is destroyed. All kinds of freakish accidents abound, including one that's sort of a Phantom of the Opera type thing. There is much more to it than that, but I don't want to spoil anything.
This movie is sick and twisted and their northern Fargo-esque accents are as annoying as they are funny. As a southerner, it's nice to see a movie that shows white trash live in places other than the south.
