Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This movie was released in 1998. It stars David Beard as David Leigh (the filmmaker), Jim Seward as Jim Suerd, Stefan Avalos as Steven Avkast, Lance Weiler as Locus Wheeler and Rein Clabbers as Rein Clackin. Stefan and Lance also wrote and directed the movie. The movie was not rated, but I would say it is an R.
This movie is similar in structure to The Blair Witch Project, except this came out BEFORE Blair Witch. It is a faux documentary about some guys with a cable access show, Fact or Fiction, who go into the woods to find out about the Jersey Devil. They plan to do the show as a webcast/irc chat/cablecast all at once. Only 1 comes out alive, two are sliced up and one is never found. The survivor is convicted of the murders and he dies due to unknown causes in prison.
Unlike Blair Witch this movie does show quite a bit of gore, it is also not shaky and totally hand held looking. It also is different in that these guys go into the woods having a good time, just looking for a way to boost the ratings of their TV show. They are not afraid of anything in the woods. You know they are going to get shredded to bits but they don't so you are on the edge of your seat as the documentary shows bits of film they guys took on their last night.
Most of the movie is made up of the Documentary film that covers the case. The documentary maker is looking into the whole case but begin to wonder if Jim, who was convicted really killed the others. We see not only tape from the woods, but interviews with people involved with the men, and the show, news reports. We hear 911 tapes and police radio tapes, all narrated by the filmmaker. It has a very realistic documentary feel like and it actually comes off as quite scary.
A year into the making of the documentary the missing last tape from the woods shows up on the doorstep of the filmmaker all mangled and damaged. As the documentary maker is having a film specialist try to piece together the mangled film you get to see the last remaining time these men have in their lives, it is really tension inducing. We soon learn the killer is caught on the damaged tape.
Unfortunately the end of the movie was a bit of a disappointment. It turned from documentary into a regular "horror" type movie ending. I have no idea why the last 10-15 minutes of this movie are this way but it really stinks :-(
Overall the movie is watchable and pretty good, just know that the last 10 minutes suck and you wont be nearly as disappointed. I would even go so far as to say do not watch the last 10 minutes but the movie is rather compelling so I doubt you could just turn it off.
Fun Fact: This movie was never put on actual film. It was done all on digital camera's and shown only in its digital format. It was also made for $900! The movie also has a nice website at http://www.thelastbroadcast.com
