First, let me say that I am no fan of Martin Lawrence. And this film just reinforced my opinion of him.
The basic storyline is that Lawrence, a jewel thief, hides a huge diamond in a building under construction before he's sent to prison. Upon his release from prison, he goes to retrieve the diamond only to find that the building he's hidden it in is now an L.A. Police Dept. police building. What's a boy to do? He decides to impersonate a cop to get in and retrieve the diamond.
Stevie Wonder could see what's going to happen next. M.L. is partnered with Luke Wilson ("Home Fries", former boyfriend of Drew Barrymore), a by-the-book (white) cop.
This movie is an extremely poor comparison to Beverly Hills Cop. Take a street wise cop and pair him with a geeky white cop. It worked for B.H.C. because 1. it was a new idea and 2. B.H.C. had Eddie Murphy. Lawrence is NO Eddie Murphy. Lawrence tries too hard to be funny and he just isn't.
Remember Judge Reinhold partnered with Eddie Murphy in B.H.C.? Now there was a great pairing.
Dave Chappelle plays Tully, an old bank robbing buddy of Lawrence's and he plays his role really well. He doesn't overdo it and he's actually funny.
I also hated the music in this movie. Beverly Hills Cop is everything this movie tries to be. The soundtrack for B.H.C. is excellent, whereas if you don't like black/rap music, you won't like the music with this film.
The one casting choice that really surprised me was William Forsythe playing a (good) cop. This is the first movie that I've seen W.F. where he played a good guy. He's usually always the bad guy. (I like him better as a bad guy.)
FYI - This is the movie that Lawrence was trying to get in shape for when he collapsed while jogging and had to be hospitalized for a few days.
So do I recommend this movie? No way. If you want to see this movie done the right way, rent "Beverly Hills Cop".
