From the opening credits till the end, Fight Club is more about humanity's mind and its stuggle for acceptance than just your average bare knuckle bruiser. Yeah, you probably wont go see Fight Club because you read this review. Sure you won't get out of the movie what I got out of it. But here is a example of such an amazing written drama, that most people are left struggling themselves. Go with a group. At the end, I'm willing to bet that there will be a few people that loved the movie, and a few people that hated it, but hardly any 'tweeners' (those that just can't decide).
Ah, back to acceptance. Its kind of the central theme in Fight Club. You might disagree, but lets look at the facts. Norton is going around looking for acceptance since he never really had any parental role models, or significant others. His work is monotonous and his personality has him joining self help groups for the fun of it, until it becomes addicting. He is so involved in this hunt for acceptance that he meets Tyler D. (Pitt), someone who he admires, because Tyler is everything Norton isn't, and someone that accepts Norton for what he is. The Fight Club cronies are also in it for the same reasons; to be a part of group, that accepts them for what they are, regardless of race, color, social setting. Even Marla (the female interest) is seeking acceptance. She follows Norton's route with the AA groups and then winds up shacking up with Tyler because she gets to be nearer to Norton, all the while trying to win Norton's affections. Its a complicated love triangle and I don't want to reveal the major twists and turns so Ill stop the character analysis between the two. You'll be as shocked as I was to learn the whole truth.
The unique story line, the unusal camera angles, and the multiple scene shots, the graphic fighting and the tremendous fast pace keep you in your seat. The characters plight, the underlying motif, and the mysterious ending keeps your mind racing just as fast.
Fight Club is a great movie. No wait it sucked. Well hold on there, it was great now that I think about it. And thats just what you have to do. Think about it. The more you do, the more the plot, the dialogue, the characters all make sense. Fight Club is not for everybody, hence the first rule. If you want to think about a movie as well as watch it at the same time, then see Fight Club. If you are going to see it because Tyson still can't box, then don't (but you will miss out).
Lets face it, all the actors did an amazing job portraying their characters. Norton is just terrific, possibly his best role, although in American History X he is just as convincing. Even Brad Pitt. Yes the same guy who was in Meet Joe Black. And hey, if you don't want to see it for Pitt, go see if for Meatloaf...Yes, Meatloaf.
I am going again. Not to be intrigued or get more out of the movie, but to enjoy the acting and plot twists, areas of the movie I almost took for granted because the story was so gripping the first time around.
