Opinion Summary
A Big, Bold Opera With Fathers, Sons, Daughters and Frogs
by Grouch | Aug 22 '00
Pros: The most ambitious and successful movie of 1999 leaps off the screen like a soaring opera
Cons: The much-touted soundtrack is, at times, a big distraction

Having just re-watched Magnolia with the intention of reviewing it, I read your review in Epinions and decided to bow to your superior analysis. You truly put this movie into clear perspective and untangled the most sinuous and twisting plots.

I loved the movie, and your review more than did justice to it.

Thanks for a wonderful job!

Nothing more to say except for three things:

1. The DVD for this film is incredible. Buy it.

2. You're absolutely right about the "six minutes" thing.

3. This is one of the finest movies ever made.

I'm looking forward to my second viewing of this film, especially after reading your review. Some films are better the second time around, I think -- Fight Club, Sixth Sense, American Beauty, Dogma (maybe) and Magnolia.

Outstanding reivew. Thanks.

"82 degrees in North Hollywood"... yeah, right...

Tell me this, though; did you notice the prevalence of 82's the first time you saw the movie?

I didn't like this film nearly as much as you did, but you stated your case quite well, as usual...

this is already one of my all-time favorite movies. Most people did not "get" it, I think, or did not care to. This was such a wonderful review that I may have to wait a long time before I ever write one. Thanks for the good reading.

Michael,
You're absolutely correct--I should have given unsuspecting readers a warning. To mend my ways, I've added a "spoiler warning." Please don't send a pestilential rain my way (though I've got my umbrella ready).
Best,

I loved the soundtrack. I, however, snorted with derision when it started raining. You might want to put in a "spoiler" notice, as that is a big surprise in the movie that I wouldn't want ruined if I were reading the review.

That my friend's mom worked at a dude ranch where Kevin Bacon stayed. Two degrees.

Good job here. Another nicely done review. You watch a lot of movies. My wife and I haven't seen a movie since "Blair Witch" as we're still trying to get rid of the bad taste in our mouths. I might have to check this one out.
