Pros:Good acting
Cons:No real plot, bad writing, stereotypical characters
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this to anyone. After viewing American Beauty, I honestly wonder if the critics saw the same movie I did.
I attended this movie at the $1 show by my
house with a couple of friends. I wanted to see Romeo Must Die. However, since American Beauty was starting right away, we went to see that. What a waste of my $1. Critics and everyone else said it was a wonderful movie, and I believe it even won an award. I honestly wonder if they saw the same movie I did.
The actors and actresses in the movie did a good job. However, the movie was, in my opinion, very boring. The movie begins with a voice-over telling us that today was the day the main character dies. The main character is an older guy named Lester who pays very little attention to his wife or teenage daughter. He faces a mid-life crisis after having all these adulterous dreams of the teenage daughter's best friend, Angela.
The mother is a real-estate agent who is fed up with both her boring husband and life. She is seduced by Buddy, the biggest real-estate salesman in their county. The daughter, meanwhile, is being stalked by her new, next-door neighbor's son, Ricky, who does not go anywhere without his camera.
After seeing his wife with her new lover, the main character quits his job, buys a new sports car, starts weightlifting, and begins buying pot from Ricky. Ricky, meanwhile, accidentally videotapes the neighbor working out in the nude. His father,a strict military man, thinks they are an item and goes ballistic.
I fell asleep several times throughout this movie as the plot goes along very slowly. The movie also consistently features rose petals floating around the screen which made no sense to me what-so- ever. My friends and I were left perplexed as to what made this movie a favorite with the critics as we were
all bored.
I think there were a variety of things in this movie that I
did not really like. As someone else mentioned, the characters were really very two-dimensional, and did not seem to care about anyone other than themselves. No one in this film seemed to care about morality, or the right thing to do. The characters were so boring I, honestly, could not relate to them! The plot was hard to follow, and there was no real ending to the movie.....
We never, as an audience, find out who killed Lester. I hate movies that leave you with unanswered questions. This movie was full of liberal themes. The characters were stereotypes. You have the stereotypical, strict marine worried about homosexuals, the teenager looking for someone to love her, the mom looking to achieve perfect social status, and the father facing a mid-life crisis and lusting after one of his daughter's friends. This movie may not have appealed very much to me as I'm only 24, but perhaps, older people would enjoy it. I know that I, for
one, did not.
