I have come to realize that almost EVERYONE LOVES this movie. I can't say that I did, I could barely sit trough it. The move is as big a cliche as they come! I have to agree with some of the other reviews when commenting on the roses. How dumb! Well I'm glad the teenie boopers got it, with all the Shakespeare we teach them is school they should pick up on some sort of symbolism. It is perfectly plausible to say that it was only Local American Audiences that embraced this movie and not even the preteens of foreign counterparts. The movie did touch on some subjects that have never been seen in an American movie before. Teenage Sex, infidelity and statutory rape are all seen in this move, but they are also seen in many, many, classical plays going as far back as the Greeks. For the Writers, Director and Actors who all had to study this in school, this was not a new idea.
If an American audience wants to see symbolism in a modern piece lets look at plays, stretching it would be the movie Magnolia.
Sorry to the fans. I can see why this could be popular in America, we have a lapse in creative writing and concentrate on Math and Science.
