While vacationing in Lima, Peru for two months, with very little to do (have already been to Macchu Picchu this trip) my friend and I have been hitting quite a few movies, including 'The Green Mile', and I must say that, though it IS long, it is well worth the sitting. Tom Hanks, as always, is charming, and plays such an incredibly 'human' character dealing with a rather unusual 'issue'. The supporting cast is an amazing ensemble, from Michael Jeter (who has been one of my favorite character actors since his moving speech when he won the Tony for his performance in 'Grand Hotel' on Broadway in which he told the world that 'If you are sitting there watching this and you have a drug and alcohol problem, I am living prove that you can get past it and make something of your life'), to David Morse (remember St. Elsewhere?), Graham Greene ('Clearcut', another of his lesser known films, is a must see for the folks who feel for the plight of the Native Americans), and Gary Sinise.
Based on the book by Stephen King, the film deals with issues on death row in 1935, similar, and yet very different, to 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Guilt and innocence (did the giant black man really rape and kill two small children?). Black and white. Right and wrong. Basic humanity. You will laugh (a urinary infection storyline, and a friendly mouse), cry (you actually fall in love with death row inmates), feel angered by 'the system' (past and present), and walk away from the theater feeling 'wow'. You'll know you've just seen a great film. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if someone walks away with a couple of Oscars. Check it out.
