I wanted to see this movie ever since I read the last page of the book. I still thought that I would be disappointed somewhat, seeing how the movies really never do a book justice. I am happy to say, in this case, I was wrong.
Tom Hanks plays a great Paul Edgecombe, the head guard on E Block (Death Row)in Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He showed true compassion towards these inmates at a time that they needed it the most, not only to keep the inmates calm when it was coming their turn to sit in "Old Sparky", but to keep himself and the other guards safe.
Michael Clarke Duncan plays John Coffey (like the drink, just not spelled the same), a seemingly dim-witted giant of a man, who wins Boss Edgecombe over by healing his illness. He is walking "The Green Mile" for raping and killing two little girls, but....how could such a miraculous healing man do such a thing? Did he or didn't he?
This movie followed the book very closely, the parts that they left out and added just made the movie better, in my opinion.
I thought I wanted to smack Percy Wetmore around when I was reading the book, but seeing the movie made me just about ache for it!! Everyone I know that has seen the movie hated him and wanted to do just about the same thing!
The only times I moved through the entire movie was to switch the tapes (it comes as two VHS tapes when you rent it) and to grab some tissues. I won't mention if the tissues were from laughing so hard or from crying...you'll have to find that out for yourself.
There are many movies based on books/stories by Stephen King that I would also recommend. Misery, Delores Claiborne, Shawshank Redemption, and Apt Pupil just to name a few.
